Review of Karn's Season 5 Opener
« on: September 15, 2003, 01:05:49 PM »
Well, the new season of Family Feud is upon us finally!  A few notes from the season opener.  I know some of this is \"Woolery left Wheel\" information, but I just wanted to give an outline to the episode.

* The families now play to 300 points with the first four rounds played Single-Single-Double-Triple.

* On today's show, we got to see how the fifth round \"tiebreaker\" is played.  The top answer is on the board, the first family to get it gets the points.

* The old \"party\" music is back.  I know the format of the game is more important than the music, but I don't see why we can't have the best of both worlds, especially since Score Productions went through all the trouble to remix the classic theme!

* The families are now introduced by the heads of families before the game starts.  Since the families introduce themselves now, Burton doesn't do a \"roll call\" of all of the member's names.  Here is how today's opening went:

\"It's time to play Family Feud!  It's the Johnson Family playing against the Johnson Family.  Now, with the start of a new season, everybody's favorite answer man, Mr. Richard Karn!\"

Answer Man?  At least Burton isn't trying to make corney rhymes with the families' names anymore.  Hopefully, this was just for the season opener.

That's all I can recall off the top of my head.  I have posted a few videos from the show...one of the new opening to the show and one showing the new final triple round.  They contain SPOILERS so download and view at your own risk.  Unfortunately, I am having problems with the GSFavorites Video Vault server, so I had to post them to the GSF Yahoo Group.  Hopefully, I'll get the server problem straightened out soon and can move the videos over.  I'll also be adding pictures to the GSFavorites Family Feud website as well as starting a episode guide for season 5.  A few important links

I saw the tapings of what I've been told will be the first episodes for the double-run part of the season (they haven't aired yet here, so I'm not sure), but for all four of those episodes, Burton was given a different \"title\" with which to introduce Richard. So it looks like that'll be going on all season.

Here's a question-

Why was the classic music dropped? Do any \"insiders\" know why?

 Speculation ....

It wouldn't be rights-related, would it?

Just a hunch but I'm guessing Score doesn't come cheap.
Enjoy lots and lots of backstage TPIR photos and other fun stuff here. And yes, I did park in Syd Vinnedge's parking spot at CBS

I got the videos mentioned in my first post up at the GSFavorites Video Vault now.  I will also keep them at the Yahoo Group temporarily as well.  Check the out if you'd like.

I found a remix of the classic theme online which was labelled as the theme that would probably be used in season 5.  It has a bit of a techno-ish feel to it but retains the original melody.   Would've gone well with the current set too.  I don't know why they didn't use it, unless it's not an \"official\" remix.

You can listen to it  here.

I have a serious issue with calling question #5 a tiebreaker, since there is no tie to be broken.

I also take issue with the fact that Richard said that one family would have won if the other hadn't stolen question #4, when in fact neither family would have had enough points to win.  Well, I don't so much take issue with Richard saying that as with it making to air, given the liberal editing done elsewhere in the episode.

I will say that, despite all this, Richard looks markedly more comfortable, and playing to a point goal is always welcome in my book.

Now that I have had a chance to watch a full hour of this, I believe that the game runs more smoothly now. Having the families introduce themselves before the game play begins gives more time for game play. Since Richard doesn't have to ask every single person what they do while he's asking a quetion, he can just walk right up and demand their answer. The scoring system is a much -welcomed change. There is actually a point (no pun intended) to each round. All around, I think we're headed for a good season.

O_O!  Woolery left Wheel?????  No way!

This is a welcome change.  While I didn't mind the format they used to decide the winner in the last four seasons, it's good to see the scoring system back to the more traditional Dawson/Combs format.

For short, I just consider it a mini Bullseye Round.

I wondered the same thing myself, but I actually liked all the Feud themes.  As much as I didn't care for Feud '94, their updated version of the classic theme was not that bad.

The one used in the second episode in the double run markets had me chuckling.

Burton:  And now, here is the man with all the answers, Richard Karn.

Richard:  Burton, I don't have all the answers, because that wouldn't be legal.

Most of Fremantle's revivals haven't lasted past a year and a half (Match Game '98 (one year), TTTT 2000 (a year and a half), and Card Sharks 2001 (half a year), Whammy! is iffy), but Feud is now in their fifth season.  It will be interesting to see if the ratings are good enough for a sixth season...wait, I'm getting ahead of myself here.  Someone please hypnotise me for six months and get it to where I'll keep saying \"It's only the start of the season\" repeatedly for those months.

Nobody mentioned Karn shaved his beard down into a goatee...

I will say he looks far more comfortable hosting the show now than he was last year.  Not as comfortable as Donny Osmond, but better than I remember him.

Actually, someone did, but I think it was on another thread. I knew it, anyhow, and I haven't seen a show this season yet.

My thoughts-

Everything is GREAT, except the opening. But oh well. I like how Richard has more interaction with the families due to the new opening.

I remember guessing earlier that the major change to the show would be Richard being clean-shaven.  I didn't think he'd go halfway there!

ObKarn: Actually, Home Improvement fans did see him clean-shaven, during a flashback to the Tool Time pilot.

One other scoring change that I didn't notice yesterday.

When a family steals a bank, the point value of the answer used to steal is now again NOT added to the point total.

How long had the extra points been added? At the start of the current Fremantle/Anderson run?
