From the March 1980 issue of the short-lived Panorama magazine (published by the same folks who put out TV Guide), "Who Will Succeed Johnny Carson?"  Until I read this, I didn't even know that Dawson had guest-hosted, much less that he'd ever been considered to replace Johnny.

I went back to the TONIGHT SHOW website and punched in a guest search for all dates between June 1, 1979 and January 1, 1980 (trying to give a reasonable sample before the article deadline).  It did show two guest hosting appearances for Dawson--on July 12 and 13, 1979.  The lead guest on 7/12/79 was Susan Sullivan, and one of the subjects discussed was her having worked a recent week of MG (which, of course, he was no longer a part of by then).

The 7/13/79 show featured Betty White as a guest (MG was also a part of that conversation); she was the third guest behind Pat Boone and Ron Howard.

Except that July 7, 1979 was a Saturday.

As one of the older posters on this board, all I can do is shrug and say I never had the impression that Richard Dawson was a serious contender for succeeding Carson. I remember seeing one of his guest host stints in which, during his opening monologue, Dawson knelt down at one point, put his hands together and exclaimed, "I want the job! I really want the job!" Kind of shook my head over that.

Questions of taste and talent aside, my feeling was, Dawson belonged more to Carson's generation than the generation that would succeed Carson. In other words, if Carson had stopped doing the Tonight Show in the late 1960s (after all, Paar did it for only five years), then maybe, just maybe, Dawson would have had a chance. But once Tonight became a veritable institution, Dawson could only be seen as a journeyman for whom guest-hosting was as far as he would go, IMHO.

I enjoyed reading that. Thanks for sharing. I recalled how in the 80's when Fred Silverman was long gone from NBC Johnny would refer to the security guard in the lobby called 'Pops Silverman'.

The possibility of Dawson succeeding Carson was also briefly mentioned in the book Richard Dawson and Family Feud, stating that he was always one of the top 5 candidates considered whenever Carson's renewal was in the air.

How did ABC feel about that? Weren't they against Dawson appearing on NBC's "Password Plus", even though both that and Feud were G-T productions?

Or was it more hypothetical.

Technically, ABC's late-night back then was cop show reruns and this guy named Koppel doing a nightly update on the Iran hostage crisis.  There was nothing for ABC to keep Dawson from doing Carson.

And I think everyone was well aware of Dawson's behavior in those last days of "Feud."  If NBC had offered him Carson and ABC tried to block it, they would have that all over again.

Now ABC could've offered Dawson a late-night show, but it would've been a hard row to hoe to get respect--never mind, of course, that Carson was doing "Who Do You Trust?" before "Tonight."  He perhaps would've had it better at NBC, if only because he may've been presented as Carson's hand-picked successor.  But we'll never know.

I'm not sure how they could have been, since "Feud" still had five or so years to run...

I'm thinking Mark meant to say "Match Game."

Or then again, maybe I'm totally off base.

Richard Dawson guest-hosted for Carson a number of times and at one point was on the list of likely replacements if Johnny had quit there and then.  At times, that list included McLean Stevenson, David Brenner, Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby, Joey Bishop and quite a few others who were out of consideration by the time Carson stepped down.

The episode listed as featuring Della Reese and Pete Barbutti did not air.  During the taping, Ms. Reese suffered a stroke.

A year or so later, on another night when Dawson guest-hosted, Pete Barbutti was again a guest.  I was working on a show that taped across the hall and Pete and I got to talking.  He told me the story of the previous broadcast; of how when Della had a seizure in front of the audience, the producers (of course) stopped tape.  Then they sent Pete out to try and entertain the audience and get their minds off that, in case the decision was made to continue with the taping.  He called it the toughest spot he ever had to play in a lifetime of doing comedy, and he was glad when the decision was made to stop and send the audience home.

Pete also told me about another time he'd been on The Tonight Show and the program did not air.  He was a guest the night there were tech problems during a number by John Davidson, who was the musical guest.  Carson got furious and called a halt to the taping.  (Pete never even taped his spot that night.)  A rerun was subtituted.

Now here's the punch line to this...

About two hours later, they taped that night's episode.  Dawson's entire monologue was about flying on airplanes and about things that made it seem dangerous.  Shortly after the taping, the producers got word that there had been a huge air crash in the mid-west with many fatalities.  They decided not to air that episode, either, and stuck on a rerun.  It was finally broadcast about three weeks later on a Monday night...and must have puzzled people because there were guests on it plugging upcoming events that had already occurred.

In the history of Carson's Tonight Show, I believe there were five times a show was taped (or started taping) and it either wasn't finished or didn't air the evening it was supposed to...and Dawson hosted two of them and Barbutti was a guest on three.  (The two others were pre-empted by late-breaking news events.  One, hosted by Robert Klein, never aired at all.  The other, hosted by Johnny, ran a week later.)

Anyway, yes, Richard Dawson was a ranking Carson guest host, at least for a little while.
