New Fox game show in development
« on: August 14, 2007, 09:00:18 AM »
Over half a century ago, Mark Goodson & Bill Todman, with the help of Bob Stewart, conceived of a show that started as Three of a Kind, which became a Mike Wallace-hosted pilot called Nothing But the Truth, which then went to a long run through 5 different versions as To Tell the Truth.

Now, the L.A. Times is reporting that Fox has ordered a game show using the TTTT pilot's title, NBTT, but is, instead, a show based on a format that's been a hit on TV in Colombia, but was originally developed by Studs creator Howard Schultz.  It involves a contestant answering incriminating questions while hooked to a polygraph.  If that contestant answers 21 incriminating questions without being caught in a fib by the polygraph, $50,000 is the prize.

I knew this sounded familiar.  I was digging through my BuzzerBlog archives from the Blogger era, and I found when they were originally casting this show for NBC.  This was back in September 2006.  Seems they passed on it, which is a good thing.

Muchos years ago on America 2-Night with Martin Mull, there was a great gag interview with Sherman Hemsley of The Jeffersons hooked up to a lie detector. Paraphrased -
Barth: Nice to have you here, Sherman.
Sherm: Delighted to be here. (BUZZ)
Barth: Sorry to hear you lost out to ***** in the recent Emmys.
Sherm: Well, he deserved... (BUZZ)....he was the better..(BUZZ)....I think it was fixed!
Barth: I'm sure you wanted that Emmy.
Sherm: Well, it's not an indicator of true talent...(BUZZ)....it's just a trinket..(BUZZ)...I wanted that sucker real bad!
Jerry: But it must be great being a star. Except when you have to make all those promotional tours. It must be tough going from city to city and being stuck in hotel rooms all alone every night.
Sherm: .....(silence)....

All that to say...let's go straight to the Celebrity version. THAT I'd watch....

PS, friend Byrd - At about the same time TTTT was in development, the show People Are Funny played a game called Detecto, where a contestant questioned three people claiming to be something, such as a Southern senator. There was quite the row between G-T and John Guidel over who took whose format.

Interesting to hear, as I hadn't heard that before.  Any more details? Not to mention the fact that Goodson got ticked over Bamboozle...

I say we can the debates and just have each of the presidential candidates appear as a contestant on this show.  It would be more entertaining and more informative.

FOX's new slogan: "Scraping the bottom of the barrel for over 20 years!"
"It wasn't like this on Tic Tac Dough...Wink never gave a damn!"

I didn't realize Maury would be on in primetime.  Learn something new every day. ;)
When you're at the grocery game and you hear the beep, think of all the fun you could have at "Crazy Rachel's Checkout Counter!"

And how soon we forget "Hot Seat." Not the Wally George talk show, but the Jim Peck/H-Q relationship game on ABC.

Yes, come to think of it...just over a quarter-century ago...F. Lee and polygrapher Ed Gelb did a show called Lie Detector, but there were no cash prizes at stake then.

I remember hearing about this, hoping that it would die in Pilot Hell, but here we are. I'm completely unsurprised that we've come this far. I can only imagine the kind of question that they'd ask.

I suppose this would be a nadir in the cycle of the genre. I hope so.

I know many of you were up all night wondering about this possible Fox addition.

Well,....it's official.

I think it should've been called, "Are You Smarter Than A Lie Detector" :-p
