Who were some of the guys who had a hosting career that only consisted of pilots and never had a regular game show hosting run. A few were:
Orson Bean (Concentration 1985)
Ed Byrnes (Wheel Of Fortune)
David Letterman (Riddlers)
Richard Kline (To Tell The truth 1990 pilot that aired by mistake)

Steve Edwards did a few that either didn't sell or got on with another host.

Gary Collins

In the '70's the soap opera mags would do a game show feature and I remember one issue did a story on upcoming game shows and they mentioned Julius LaRosa would be hosting a show called "Noot's Game."

Some might say chemistry among the panel, although I think that was just fine. However, there was at least one segment in the game where they had a mystery guest from the older version of the show. For example, let's say the mystery guest was Paul Newman. The panelist would ask a question (their own question, not necessarily one that was originally asked), and then they would play back a clip of Paul answering either "yes" or "no." Not only was this highly contrived and awkward, but it also left open the possibility that the people deciding whether the answer was "yes" or "no" might not necessarily know what the correct answer was. That, IMHO, is why it was bad.

Didn't Joe Namath host a pilot for Family Feud? I swear it was mentioned on the E! THS on Feud that Namath was originally going to be offered the hosting job for the 88 revival, but lost out to Ray Combs.

I don't want to imagine a Namath FF...

Yikes. Just to be clear, was the mystery guest even in the studio?

("Mystery guest who isn't here, will the producers please cue up your audio responses, please?" One of the great game show catchphrases, right there.)

No... their prior appearance was on a monitor. The clip was shown where they entered and signed in please, then sat down. From then on, it was just a still of the mystery guest on the screen until his or her answer was cued up.

If not, add him to the list...he hosted 2 "Crossword" pilots that never aired, thank God.
