The Most Obvious Candidate for A Game Show Slot Machine...
« on: February 10, 2008, 01:00:54 PM »
I had the opportunity to play this http://www.igt.com/GamingGroup/Games/game_...id=5069&pl= in Vegas last week, and made $35 in the first 5 minutes!

The only complaint I had on the machine was...Why did it take so long???

See, usually I roll my eyes when the gamblers around here crow about Yet Another Slot Machine That Is Freakin' Identical To Every Other One Out There Except This One Has Game-Show Imagery.

THIS one, I'd actually throw a few bucks into just for the novelty.

Actually, that's been out for quite awhile. When I was in Vegas in August they had those.

They've been out since at least October, 2006 (which is when I first remember seeing them at the MGM Grand in Vegas).  A novelty to be sure, but it wore off quick on me (perhaps because I wasn't winning...).

I am completely fascinated by pachinko.

It's too bad it's nearly impossible to find around here.

Because while there's novelty in watching a slot machine on TV, there isn't much in playing slot machine on a slot machine? Kind of like playing the arcade version of "The Magnificent Marble Machine?"

I think the novelty comes when you're actually playing the big slot machine you've seen on TV.

Which you're not, until you line up 5 of the special symbols. The vibe I got was that it was like EVERY SINGLE OTHER 5-reel slot out there, save for the special little jackpot bonus game. And if you're playing a slot specifically for the bonus game, you are a fool who deserves to be separated from his money.

This is why I don't understand the fervor around here whenever a new even-tenuously-GS-themed slot machine hits.

I don't go to casinos very often — last time was several years ago — but I confess that on the rare occasion when I'm in one, I play the slots.  I'm not really a gambler so I never spend more than $10 during any one such trip, and I find that that's just enough to have fun without taking a huge risk.

Nor am I a game show purist; I've played the South Park slot machine too.  At least that one had funny sound effects. ;-)

Oh, I understand them fine. It's about the purest way for a gambler to get that shot of adrenaline they're addicted to, without any of that bothersome game-playing or decision-making. Put in coin, push button, get adrenaline fix, repeat until satiated or broke. Same reason so many people play the same numbers every week (or Quick Picks) when they play the lottery.

What I don't understand is a) crowing about a new machine when near as I can tell there have been exactly zero innovations in the industry for a solid decade (not that there needs to be; see Fix, Gambling, Pure), and b) formulating an opinion on a machine based on how loose it is, which is almost entirely an operator-settable option.
