Fox-owned stations picking up "Pursuit"
« on: March 24, 2008, 12:51:53 PM »
An article in this week's TVWeek about the new fortunes of game shows in syndication says that Debmar Mercury has sold "Trivial Pursuit:  America Plays" to the Fox-owned stations, so it's hopefully close to a go (but unfortunately, Mark L. will probably not be able to duck out of "Truth"):

http://www.tvweek.com/news/2008/03/game_ge...okes_syndie.php

Other bullet points:

--"DOND" is now in 95% of U.S. homes, with a few access slots secured (it'll be on at 4 p.m. in NY on WNBC).

--"Temptation" is probably dead.  Lots of love, Rossi.

With two game shows set to hit the syndicated airwaves in a matter of months, and at least three more bubbling in development for fall 2009, the genre appears to be harkening back to its 1980s glory days, when the category dominated station time slots with the likes of “Tic Tac Dough” and “Press Your Luck.”

PYL was in Syndication!?!?
<buzz>
I'm sorry, that's incorrect...The board goes back.

However, I do recall that there were plans to take PYL into syndication.  How close did that come to fruition?  Could it be that there were ads in the trades in the 80's that were promoting a nighttime PYL before that idea fell through?

I don't necessarily see where the author implied that PYL aired in syndication. To me, it simply implies that the high number of new shows proposed is reminiscent of TV schedules of the 1980s. TTD and PYL were both very popular in the 1980s.

Nothing more, nothing less.

I was just about to start a post about the upcoming syndication season and where everything stood.  So we are looking at:

Wheel
Jeopardy
Family Feud
Millionaire
Crosswords
Deal or No Deal
Trivial Pursuit

and the article mentions possible goes for Fifth Grader (perfect for sydie, IMO) and Power of Ten.  Very interesting crop this year.

Gotta be honest, though.  There's not a whole lot of slots for a whole lot of games.  I heard somewhere that Rachael Ray's show is "on the ropes" of being canned, so that frees an hour...but I haven't really heard of anymore current syndie cancellations.

/LIN TV has the show for its affilates
//Indiana is covered
///except my area (only Indiana area without LIN TV ownership)

When you're at the grocery game and you hear the beep, think of all the fun you could have at "Crazy Rachel's Checkout Counter!"

I call Rotsky.  PYL reruns, at least, were indeed aired in syndication in some markets, with the hope that there would be demand for new episodes.  Not that I think the author knew that but it was correct anyway, if inadvertently.

IIRC, it came from some idiot who saw Ray's ratings drop and seized on it without bothering to see if ratings for daytime syndie shows overall had dropped during that time... and it turned out that they had, Oprah included.

Is that confirmed for all affiliates, or just NBC O&Os? If the former, that means WAVY (NBC affil.) or sister station WVBT would pick up the show. Montel ends after the season (a "Best Of" package will air next year), and both stations air the show (WAVY at 4pm, WVBT showing week-old reruns at noon), so I'm guessing should WAVY pick this up, it will probably get a decent daytime slot, maybe even in tandem with D/ND...

Honestly, I'd be surprised if WAVY did not pick up at least one new show; Crosswords holds a very solid 2nd place position in its 2pm slot.

'09 IIRC, as I'm pretty sure there would be more buzz if they were premiering this fall. Last summer, I read an article stating that there's no sitcoms going into syndication, quite possibly a first. I believe a few are eligible for '09 as well (Office, Earl, Everybody Hates Chris).

There are often exceptions for these 'bulk' purchases. They (the station group) get a deal for plugging it into multiple stations, but it's not a mandatory station-wide pickup.

Exhibit A : I work for a LIN....and at last word, we're not picking it up. That's because we're up against an NBC O&O , who is picking it up.

are all of the "Judge" shows returning?  That's where I would think there's room for some elimination.

The only court show I heard that is not returning is Judge Hatchett.

I have heard that there are at least new 3 talkies in the mix for this fall -- Marie Osmond being one of them.

Then again, I have been noticing that sitcom reruns are becoming endangered on open-air stations:  One reason is that there hasn't been much fresh, new & worthy fare that is becoming syndicated.  Second, the popular mainstays (Raymond, Seinfeld, Scrubs,...) have been run into the ground and need to take some time off (thanks in part to the cable channels airing them 2 to 4 times a day on average + the 1 or 2 times per day on local channels).

From what I've read, the following shows are scheduled to premiere in daily syndication this Fall

Talk

Bonnie Hunt
The Doctors (with one of the "Bachelor" mimbos)

Court

Family Court with Judge Penny (distributed by Program Partners)
Judge Karen (Sony)

Game

DoND
Trivial Pursuit

AFAIK, Marie Osmond's show isn't scheduled to debut until Fall 2009.  Steve Harvey was supposed to be launching a talk show based around his radio show, but I haven't heard a thing about that in months.

Shows that have been canceled...

Talk

Montel Williams
iVillage Live (or whatever it's called now)

Court

Judge Hatchett

Anything I'm missing?  With my luck, it's likely :)
