Some thoughts after seeing Disc 1 (I'm geting them thru Netflix, and we're getting 1 disc at a time)...

1. C'mon, give them some small points for doing the recreation of the original Password set for the menu, instead of just some generic picture of Allen Ludden and a place to click.

2. I wonder if James Mason ever recovered from the beating he took at the hands of the female contestant.

3. I did catch Anne Bancroft spelling out C-O-Z-Y in signlanguage, but wasnt' sure what she was spelling.

4. The sound effects sounded strange on the Benny ep. Just a bad recording, or something having to do with that being taped in Los Angeles?

Oh, and retro maven James Lileks has some funny comments about the whole thing here.
This isn't a plug, but you can ask me about my book.

This, right here, is a fantastic idea that I had never thought of. I'm not one to buy these DVD sets because I would watch them once and then they would sit. But Netflix, that's a great idea.

/the "watch instantly" feature with this would be the bee's knees
//looks like most of the recent DVD sets are on Netflix, where have I been

I've been lovin' the Lileks blog for years.  Check out his collection of matchbook covers, motel postcards, and old-school restaurants.  His commentary is priceless.

Bad video transfer of the CBS-TV City tape-- though it appears there may have been a generic alignment problem in the TV City machine that was used back in '62.  There are a couple of other Password eps taped during the same Hollywood stay that have exactly the same problem, which is why none of them have ever aired on GSN.

Although the transfer techs **were** trying to blast through these as quickly as they could back when copies were being struck for GSN & Goodson-Todman, I'm not certain if this sort of misalignment fault is (readily) correctable.

I used to ride my bike home at lunch, make a sandwich and chocolate milk and sit and watch this, then go back to school. Might have to get this!

From what I call The Desilu Episode, my thoughts:
* Lucille Ball (I found myself afraid of her)
* Gary Morton (looked like he was really enjoying himself)
* Lucie Arnaz (what up with all the close-ups?)
* Desi Arnaz Jr. (never seen him that young before)
And the announcer was Bern Bennett!!!

As much as I wish I had time to read all these pages of posts, I don't.  So if I'm asking an already answered question, please forgive me.  But can anyone tell me if the DVD set will have an answer blackout capability, so that we at home can play along?  Thanks.

There were no options to "blackout" words, but for me the play-along factor of coming up with the perfect clues is enough to make the episodes enjoyable!  Just thinking about this idea, though, it would have been possible to create a second audio track where the announcement of the words could be muted.  Then a opaque rectangular subtitle could have been added over the password to block it from view.  The tradeoff would be that the audio track would take more real estate on the disc, and we wouldn't get as many classic episodes to enjoy.

Some DVD players have the ability to zoom in the picture, so that may be an option.  Maybe try changing the aspect ratio on the TV monitor to cutoff the bottom of the screen.

Of course, you'd have to hit the mute button when you see Allen stretch out his hand.

That's an interesting idea, but it would have required BCI to put forth far far more effort than they were willing to.
