Apparently, they end their 11 PM newscast at 11:35 on Saturday nights rather than at 11:29, so they have to air a recorded East Coast feed, rather than the live West Coast feed.
Oh, yeah, they do. That would explain it. :) (For some reason I thought the 11:35 start was SOP now.)

WTMJ used to start it at 10:35, but changed to 10:30 within the past couple of years, probably when they switched to HD (as they did not have the capability of recording HD at the time)

It's odd because he was on the last two weeks of Weekend Update Thursday.
Yes, because he retired at the end of last season. Were the Weekend Updates repeats?
No.  The Updates were new.

Hammond was most likely guesting (much like Amy Poehler was to coanchor with Seth Meyers).

When SNL announced the cast member changes earlier this month, it was being reported that the show was negotiating with Hammond, but NBC didn't elaborate on what the negotiations concerned.  Sounds like it was to make appearances on at least the prime time specials, but I could see also see him making "special appearances" on the regular version doing a specific impression (similar to Jan Hooks frequently appearing as Hillary Clinton after her cast member run ended).'

An update from Peter King's Monday Morning QB column at SI.com (for you non football fans - all three of you - King does the Sunday night pregame show for NBC and is one of Sports Illustrated's NFL writers)

Met Don Pardo in the elevator at NBC Saturday. You know Don Pardo, the voice of NBC for decades; he now intros the talent on "Saturday Night Live.'' He said he flies in every Thursday from his home in Tucson for the gig. He's 91. What a cool thing, meeting such a famous voice.
This isn't a plug, but you can ask me about my book.

Well I guess that answers that.  Lorne must have talked him back into it.

Indeed.

He now intros talent?  When was this written, 1977?

Well, it is SNL's 35th anniversary season. I can see Lorne wanting to have that continuity for one more year, at least.
