You know, that would be a perfectly fine reason, the aesthetics of it all might look weird. But the impression I get from some of the G-R posters is "ZOMFG! Change!1! It's not the eggcrates so I'll never watch again!!1!"

The same Chicken Little reaction that the modified IUFB screens got, and honestly, if someone hadn't told me, I would never have known. And of course, it's not everyone, but the one or two overreactions are enough. Although I'm not fond of some of the changes the show has taken, I've never understood the idea of boycotting because the show doesn't look exactly the same way it did in 1984.
I just wish I knew what the front of the damn thing looked like.  They proved last year with Contestants' Row and Temptation that they can make these new displays work really well.  They also proved with the Showcase podiums and, to a lesser extent, Any Number that they can come off looking pretty half-baked.

A bird house with a chimney and a little TV set? It does. It looks to me like they repurposed a set piece from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

If I had to make a complaint about the new displays, it would probably be the inconsistency. The Contestants Row screens were awesome replicas, but then they do the white on blue for the Showcase screens. It's not jarring enough to annoy me, I simply think an eggcrate replica would look just as cool, esp. if they switched up the background colors, i.e. black for the Showcase, red for Plinko, etc.

Yet if I were TPIR dictator and didn't have to worry about ratings, I'd retire Plinko.  I hate it.

Do you have a reason why?

The impression I get when watching Plinko is that it comes closer than most games to bringing out in the contestants and audience the same sort of irritating things that show up on a show like Deal or No Deal.  I also find the game tedious and too long with a bad ratio of pricing to interesting gameplay.  I'm sure there will be somebody with statistics to prove otherwise, but it also seems as though it gets played more than almost anything else, with the exception of one-decision games that are substitutes for something else.

Punchboard has relatively litle pricing, but at least forces the contestants to make interesting decisions.

Then again, I'm probably highly atypical in that I think I'd nominate Switcheroo as my favorite pricing game.

That's a very reasonable explanation and I happen to agree with most of it.

I think, while it lacks in gameplay, it does bring a nice dose of harmless fluff to the show.

My biggest gripe with Plinko is that it comes with so much fanfare and excitement, but more often than not ends in disappointment. I still find it surprising that people go so bananas over the only game on the show that has never truly been won. How many people have we seen win $30,000 on Plinko? Just one, and it took nearly a decade to do it. I'd be all for them going back to $25,000 and using the Davidson configuration to see people win a decent amount; for a game that offers a $50,000 prize, I'm tired of seeing $2100 wins for someone who got all 5 chips (and these days, it's a miracle to see someone take 4 to the board, let alone 5)

Fact To Make You Feel Old: Just about every contestant who appears in a Price is Right Teen Week episode from here on out has only known a world where Drew Carey has been the host.
According to Marc Green of Golden-Road.net, "The Price is Right" will be introducing a very exciting new Pricing Game called Pay the Rent with a grand prize of...$100,000!!!
A hundred grand! Cadbury, fetch me....TWO TOWELS!

I think it would be terrifically funny if the game is won on the first playing and we get another stretch of Pick-a-Number, and That's Too Much and weeks where nobody wins everything, because the wad was shot on a single game. (Then again, they offered a Tesla convertible on what amounts to a one-in-twelve shot that you can't control. A game that isn't won stops being fun to watch.

It still looked like a readout for a game show. Eggcrate and vanes look like they belong on a game show, and the current showcase screen doesn't have that look. It doesn't ruin my day if the crew decide that everything should be in that assy Dom Casual font, but I do like it less than Swiss.

Along these lines, I'm okay with any switch to modern displays, as long as the font used in said display is not included in a standard Windows install*. Bonus points for using the old-school display font in the modern display. For what the repairs and maintenance must cost on a 20 or 25-year old eggcrate display, I'm sure that can be made up in one plasma/LCD purchase, all for the better.

Amen, brother. One of the UK versions of TPIR had LCDs for everything and everything (even the wheel) was in Frutiger. I don't think they should go that far, but a little bit of tasteful and simple would serve these guys well.

We've got a weather guy at my station who, when adding on-screen notations to the radar image, never fails to use...(shudder)...Comic Sans.

I donno...looks like a good visual game, but $100,000?  Matthew Lesko must be controlling the prize budget for the game.  I do hope there is somewhat of a unique pricing element to the game...they've done a good job with new pricing elements (Rat Race, Gas Money to an extent) as of late.

Corrected, as you're clearly giving Pittsburgh way too much credit.

At least our baseball team is better than theirs...
