I realize I'm coming way late to the party, but this needs to be said:
To me, though, it just represents most of what's wrong with the internet, all packed inside one convenient URL.
You've never heard of 4chan, have you? Encyclopaedia Dramatica, perhaps?

TVTropes is like candy the way those sites are like bleach.
You're in a room. You're wearing a silly hat.
There are letters on the floor. They spell "NOPE".

Are there any other types of anime references?

Duly noted. ;-)

Next thing you know, we'll be accused of being some sort of game show otaku.

You know, I'm the anime game show guy and I agree wholeheartedly with this.
Yeah, sure, it's addictive, maybe even entertaining if you look at it right.  To me, though, it just represents most of what's wrong with the internet, all packed inside one convenient URL.
Just like Wikipedia, I like the idea of TV Tropes, but the people who are allowed to contribute ruin it.

There's an episode of Frasier where Martin tries to juggle two dates on the same night. It would be nice to have a repository of all of the times where 2 Dates, 1 Night was used. Or when Lore was Data's evil twin on ST:TNG. Or the instances of Main Character Gets On Game Show, Fails Spectacularly, or We Should Kiss Passionately and See If That Resolves Our Differences. And so on. But self-appointed experts draw from their own knowledge, so you have overload on manga and anime, and so on. And that makes sense, if that's what the experts are into. But I'm not, so I don't give a darn about that. Sadly, there's no sort of qualification exam that you could take (like Britain's A-levels, I think) to get an operator's license for this sort of thing. I question the idea that the Bonus Round is a trope. That's a mechanic. Not the same.

Reminds me of Jon Wood's old site, where he did something very similar, i.e. "10-in-60 Bonus Rounds", "Balloon/Confetti Drops for Big Wins", "Wins Highlighted During the Intro", etc.

That would be a much better classification system...unfortunately, my contributions would probably never see the light of day because I'd be considered...well, you know..."normal".

For no apparently reason I'm thinking about the Scooby Doo thread.

"and so on" primarily consisting of comic books, british tv, sci-fi books, webcomics, video games, and other cartoons.  In other words, it's not just an anime/manga thing, it's a full-on nerd thing, and in their minds, TV Tropes is just another way to have a pissing contest.

But for someone like me who's just interested in amusement and wouldn't rely on it for anything important, it's perfectly fine.

For me, I couldn't get past the most recent edit, where the above source made one change, altering the tense of a verb.  Seth and Amy would like to chime in, but it's too damn hot to do extra work today. :-P

Enjoy the A/C! I'll gladly do the honors.

My new game (OK, this actually is addicting) is to see how long it takes me to get annoyed at something.  This time, it was the idea (reported as fact) that David Letterman staffers were fired because they didn't know ther rules to Master Key.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.
Stay tuned for all the obsessive-compulsive fun of Words Have Meanings.

Dan Benfield pulling something out of his keester and claiming it's 100% fact?!  That's crazy talk, Matt!  He'd never sometimes occasionally frequently do that without batting an eye.

Is there a way to tell what, erm, "contributions" belong to what people?

Not questioning, just curious, and not willing to throw away the blood-pressure points to go look myself. :)
