Super password and the noon news

My local affiliate also pre-empted Super Password, however I was able to watch the show during its original run.

How was that, you may ask? Since I already have a question to this effect for the forum, I'll reserve it for its own thread.

In Milwaukee WTMJ 4 which often bumped 1-2 hours in the mornings didn't air much of it at all other than I think the last six months or so usually opting for syndicated reruns like Little House On The Prairie, Quincy, etc although for a few months in early 1987 WCGV 24 picked it up along with Wordplay.

Also, WMAQ 5 in Chicago had a few instances of delaying programing, in 1979-80 they bumped Password Plus/Hollywood Squares to 3pm for local news and in 1the spring of 1987 they actually had Dating Game and then High Rollers on at 10am bumping Wheel into the afternoon until around January 1988 when Wheel returned th its rightful 10 am slot.

It's a wonder that this show lasted five years with just over half the country watching it.  Have any shows had this kind of longetivity in a slot like that?

Jeopardy! One of the situations with NBC in particular was that there was always a midday half hour for stations fill themselves. In the East it was 1pm, 12 central.  So a show could be tape-delayed until 1 for Eastern stations while they did a midday newscast.  Our NBC affil did this for many years.  When "The Gong Show" moved to 4pm in 1977, our station opted to go with Gong at 1p rather than tape delay NTT, and from then on the Noon occupant went uncleared in Sag/Bay City. Eventually, the network fed Days of Our Lives at 1pm, and gave back 4pm to the stations.

I think part of it might be that NBC had nothing else to put in that slot.  They'd tried several different shows there in the early '80s, and none lasted that long.  When Super Password came around, even though the ratings weren't great, what would they replace it with that would do better?  Plus, it was a Goodson show, and GT shows always seemed to last a lot longer with lower ratings than shows from other companies did.

Well, you'll have to take out half the country as that would only affect Eastern and Pacific time zones, right?

More people live on the coasts than in the middle.  However, I think Pacific also does 11 AM rather than noon, so back to 50%.

IIRC, when GONG shifted out of 12:30 in January 1977, expanding from 25 minutes to 30, it had a 1PM ET and a 4PM ET feed (that's how the Popsicle Twins made it on the 1PM feed but a rerun was fed at 4PM).  Then GONG moved back to 12:30 in late 1977 and only had the one feed.
