Two Equally Unlikely Wipeout Clones
« on: January 14, 2011, 10:51:26 AM »
First, from Buzzerblog: The pilot for NBC's "Catch" will be hosted by NFL legend Jerry Rice.

Oh, but it only gets better from there: GSNN reports that Merv Griffin Entertainment has teamed with Namco to develop a "big, crazy, Wipeout-type event" based on...Pac-Man.

Words fail me on these two.

I predict this will never see the light of day once MGE finds out just how protective and anal Namco is about their canon. The second they try to put a red bow in a female contestant's hair, Namco is gonna shiat a pickle. Bank on it.

Remember, they're cloning a show hosted by a SportsCenter anchor.  Not that that makes this automatically make sense...

considering they need the permission to do this in the first place, I wouldn't expect that pickle to be shiated any time soon.

Namco for years barely acknowledged the existance of "Ms. Pac-Man" due to it not being created in house. (For those that don't know, "Ms. Pac-Man" was created by 2 MIT guys who sold the game to Midway in 1981.) The only reason Namco considers it canon now is because it was even more successful than Pac-Man was at its peak. They don't even mention Jr. or Baby.

Trust me when I tell you, and I tell you this based on personal, professional experience, that Namco does not consider it canon. At all. They own the rights (Midway turned them over to avoid getting sued into the 23rd century) and STILL will not acknowledge its existence.

I'm gonna go ahead and assume Joe was being funnay.

/although if you think about it a little, and run fast and loose with the definition of "legend," it really isn't that short of a list

Because I can think of two, and 1) I don't know if Trump Card made it to full series, and 2) I don't recall much of anything about the show Randall Cunningham hosted other than the football motif.

I wasn't aware the latter was a requirement. And yes, Trump Card made it to full series, plus Cefalo has done at least one other show. (Sports Snapshot, or something? Where I come from it aired with the same infrequency and in the same "timeslot" as Scramble did, filling the gap between the afternoon NFL games and the local 5:00P news.) Plus Cunningham with Scramble, and Rashad with The Tes-ti-klees Show. Also there's the whole boatload of them who showed up along the way on American Gladiators (Theissmann, Adamle (yes, he played too), Christensen, Czonka, wasn't Nitro a color guy on there at one point?)

And I bet you would find a few more if you dug REALLY deep.

That sounds about right on Snapshot...I don't think we got Scramble here. From what I remember, it had a QVC element. I wanna say contestants won sports memorabilia, which the viewers could then call in and buy.

According to the reports I've seen strewn around the web, the pilot's between MGE and Namco/Bandai Games America.  I don't think there will be an issue with a bow, tricycle, beanie-cap, etc.

/Since you asked, Travis...
