Author Topic: Saturday Night Live  (Read 3000 times)

If you're at home on a Saturday night (me, I'm at work), you might wanna check out Saturday Night Live's "Don't Forget The Lyrics" parody. So far, it's making all the observations we've made here with the peppiness. It'll air in the first 15 minutes in other time zones, and of course, it'll be on Hulu eventually. It's good for a few laughs if you look at the parody of how over-the-top the show is, other than that, it's your typical SNL sketch of the last 15 years.

Since I rarely watch SNL anymore (yay, me?)... the one clip I landed on and got a bit of a chuckle from was Secret Word.  "I won't say the secret word.  Soup. *BUZZ*"  It's not the J! spoofs but it's still fun to watch IMODO.

Is their a legal reason SNL can parody current shows (Jeopardy!, Lyrics) and use the show name, but when they parody Match Game and Password they have to use It's a Match and Secret Word?  Just wondering...

I couldn't help but notice that it takes the syndie version of Lyrics 22 minutes to get in five songs, and they almost did that in 6 in the sketch...

Right, anything is able to be parodied, or so I thought.  Just found it interesting - didn't meant to get too off-topic.  Mr. Wizard's World is off the air, but still parodied.  Didn't know what the logic (or lack thereof) was.

I would guess it's more of if what the butt of the joke is.  For Lyrics, it was definitely the entire show.  For Secret Word/Password, it's just the straight man for the ditzy actress character, so calling it Password adds nothing.  By calling it Secret Word, you can take it in different directions.

Travis is referring to a "Celebrity Family Feud" parody that "aired" on GSN. That sketch featured MacKenzie Phillips's "family", and aired after she revealed her secret about her father.

My guesses:

For "Secret Word," it's funnier if the players aren't restricted to giving one-word clues.

The plot of "It's a Match" involved the host being murdered backstage. Referring to a real person by saying, "The host of 'Match Game' has been murdered!" sours the mood of the sketch.

MadTV did a Wheel of Fortune sketch that reduced to "No, there's no Q, but golly, you have huge knockers so why don't you spin again?" Fair use is there to cover things like parody.
