Trebek's HR Dice?
« on: December 09, 2003, 08:07:56 AM »
Found these dice last night while shopping...

http://www.c-gate.net/~dougm/DICE.jpg

...the exact name of the product is Sponge Rubber Dice Balls from Ja-Ru in Jacksonville, Florida.  But they sort of resemble the dice from the Alex Trebek-hosted versions of "High Rollers".

Price is only 99 cents.  Insurance markers not included.

Ooh. A VERY NICE find. I wonder if I can get Archie McPhee's to lay in a supply of them for me... :)

Any way of telling how big they are?  The picture really doesn't give a sense of scale, and if they're only 99 cents I can't imagine they'd be Trebek-sized.  Still, pretty cool if they are!

Just measured a side of a cube -- and it measures just under 2 inches.

So, not Trebek-sized.  But good to place near your HR box game.

I was off by half an inch...not a bad deal going from memory...I seem to remember a version of High Rollers online that you could use your computer for the board and ask your own questions and roll your own dice...(JRJ games??) and those dice were excellent for that...

For real authenticity, wouldn't one have to paint circles around the faces of the dice?  (At least that's what I've gathered from the pictures I've seen; I've never actually seen the Trebek version of the show.)

I happened to buy a pair of those at a K-B toy store. Have an idea for another dice-oriented quiz, but I have a feeling these would be too springy. Hate to imagine the camera chasing dice flying in all directions. I was searching several sites for possible tv-game-size dice, and I asked Wink where the dice for his version of High Rollers came from. His sources told him they were custom made by the NBC prop department. Ah, well...

Wow, Wink's HR wasn't on NBC, in fact it taped at CBS TV City, and NBC made the dice for that run of HR? Interesting.

The dice on the Trebek run(or at least one of the Trebek runs) had a circle around the pips on each side. Wink's dice did not have that circle, and only Wink had the golden dice for the endgame as I recall. I don't recall if Las Vegas Gambit used the dice with circles when the Big Numbers was played as the endgame on that show.

Yeah, I think I remember seeing something like that at a dollar store a few years back. I remember buying it as a gift for someone, but it was green and sparkly instead of white.

Thanks - I'll keep an eye on that site. As to the Wink reply - it's credited to Fred Wostbrock, who Wink says is a walking encyclopedia (as we all know...). No other details were offered, but it could be possible that Wink's dice were from several made for Merrill Heatter back in the NBC High Rollers days and just used again in the Wink run, or possibly new ones ordered by the producers and made by a staffer at NBC's prop department. A guess, but the best I can offer, based on the info given me.
