Prior to MGHS and PnRG, did Jon ever do a show with out the Bowzer regalia?
Not that I can think of, but I believe at least a few of his P+ appearances were as Jon "Bowzer" Bauman, and I KNOW that Allen referred to him as "Jon" many times  on the show.

Besides, Sha Na Na wasn't all THAT obscure a phenomenon in the 70's, and I think even in 1983, even THEY were still well-remembered (if not well-known) enough that the second Bauman opened his mouth they would know who he was. To borrow your analogy, it's not like you CAN put a mask on Gilbert Gottfried... :)
Did Jon ever do the arm gesture on MG/HSq...the one that where he turned to the right and made a muscle?
"They're both Norman Jewison movies, Troy, but we did think of one Jew more famous than Tevye."

Now celebrating his 22nd season on GSF!

Sometimes I wonder if I didn't give Jon a chance because back in the '70's there usually would be a great prime access game show every night at 7:30.  Except on the one night "Sha Na Na" was on........
Let's Make a Deal was the first show to air on Buzzr. 6/1/15 8PM.

Indeed he did... I don't recall whether it's in any of the episodes on the trading circuit, but I remember seeing him make that gesture at least a few times during the show's original run.

That explains the 70s version of Match Game not at all.
Keep in mind that MG as it aired for the first time in 1973 didn't have the jokes that we're familiar with.
True, but it's not as though Mark Goodson couldn't have said "cut out all that joking around" in 1974, or 1975, or 1976 . . .

I can assume so. I know on one popular circuit ep. with Arsenio Hall, Arsenio does the open to "Blue Moon" and the arm gesture when he reveals an answer. So Jon followed suit on a later question.

Chuck Woolery said on the last episode of the original Scrabble: "Get a new host, it will be a hit!  Look what happened to Wheel!"

If Peter Marshall, the bluffs, and not winning by default were in the HS segment, at least one way in the format of the hour would have been cheaper, like the Super Match probably could not have had a maximum $30,000.

Also, the "You FOOL!" episode is a reason why I think no bluffs and winning by default makes the HS gameplay faster.

It does make the game faster, but most people here didn't like the win by default rule on MGHS's Squares segment. Gilbert didn't hold the record for most consecutive questions asked on HS in the infamous 1999 episode, as we reported on Usenet when the "You Fool" episode first aired that McLean Stevenson went through about a dozen questions in a 70s episode of Marshall HS(not aired on GSN)until someone finally agreed/disagreed correctly for the win.

Mark could certainly have said that... in fact, according to Gene Rayburn, he initially balked at the silliness that was creeping its way into the questions.  But Gene helped Mark realize that the show would work and in fact take off that way.

As for Jon, I don't think he looks too fondly on his tenure as a game show host.  I got to teach his daughter her senior year, and when he came in for the regularly scheduled parent conference, he said, "[My daughter] says you remember the Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour... no one remembers the Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour!"

Oh, how wrong he was...

It may have made the game faster, but it would have denied us that episode.  I think that episode (origianally aired Oct 1, 1999) was the funniest episode of the entire current run of "Hollywood Sqaures".  It's probably in my top 10 or 20 favorite game show episodes of all time (hey...there's an idea for another thread!!)

I only hope one day we can see that McLean Stevenson run again.

I wonder how he feels about his hosting of the G-d-awful Pop and ROcker Game that same season... Fewer people probably remember that than they do MGHS.

I didn't think it was that bad - but I loved the pop music from the '80s, so it probably clouded my judgement!!

Since this MG/HS Hour topic has come up again, I have a question that maybe someone can answer.  I recently saw a press photo for the show and there were 3 contestant podiums visible during the MG round.  There were 3 contestants behind each one of them, was one of the people the returning champ just sitting, watching and waiting for the Squares portion?  Or did they actually try and play with 3 players?  Help?

The series always had two players playing MG. UNless there was a pilot done that used three players, maybe Chris C. or Randy West would know.

I'm thinking that you didn't look at that press photo too terribly clearly and you are mistaking the podium the question board sits on for a third podium. Far as I know you never saw hide nor hair of the defending champion until you saw them sitting in the "X" position on HS.
