PLUG: "America's Greatest Game Shows" starts Thursday

Spreading the word as much as I can, as hard as I can. It\'s not every day that a game show legend sets up shop in your workplace and begins giving away prizes...

Madame Tussaud\'s Hollywood, the world-famous wax attraction, is the new home for \"America\'s Greatest Game Shows.\" Beginning this Thursday, July 4, and continuing all summer long, we\'ll be presenting two shows a day, 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Every 75-minute show uses 40 contestants plucked straight from our audience, and at the end of the show, somebody has a chance to win $100,000 in cash. Bob Eubanks will be there, Wink Martindale will be there, and until somebody tells me to stop, I\'ll be there, too.

It\'s a big undertaking, it\'s the first event of its kind for Madame Tussaud\'s but we certainly hope it\'s not the last. Please come on over; it\'s a lot of fun and as a bonus, the host of each show will stick around afterward for a meet-and-greet. It\'s a chance for you to say hi to a legend and get a photo.

Tickets are available at http://www.madametussauds.com/Hollywood/\'>Madame Tussaud\'s website and you can also save a few bucks if you buy your tickets at http://www.groupon.com/deals/madame-tussauds-hollywood-5?utm_campaign=UserReferral_mih&utm_medium=email&utm_source=uu15483452\'>Groupon.

As a matter of curiosity, how are you resolving people who want to attempt to be a contestant without buying tickets?

Is that even an issue in California?  Some states have rules about sweepstakes-like events and requiring a free option to participate, but not nearly all of them do.  My guess would be that California does not.

This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.

I\'m 99% sure California is one of those states. It\'s considered an illegal lottery if it\'s luck-based and there\'s a fee. The way around it is to a) have a No Purchase Necessary alternative, or b) infuse skill into it so it\'s not entirely luck-based.

This, then.  I\'ve heard of similar situations in which a winning player is taken backstage and asked to solve a simple math problem, which theoretically solves the \"all luck\" issue.  Some states are much more strict on that sort of thing, and don\'t let you get away with that as a solution.  Since the whole point of this operation is to put tourist butts in the seats, I\'m sure the powers-that-be will do whatever they can to avoid allowing for a free option.

Exactly. There\'s always a workaround. IIRC, the solution for the poker scenario I mentioned was that players do have a free option. They can request a special table where the $1 fee is not taken out, and they can still play for the jackpot. The catch? They\'re playing poker with play money. Customers almost never take the casino up on the offer, but at least they\'re offering it.
