April 1, 1974--Now you see "Now You See It" for the first time. 30 years ago this afternoon, Jack Narz debuts this cult word search favorite created by Goodson/Todman. It went off to air (I'm guessing do to low ratings or those constant format changes) a little over a year later. Happy 30th, NYSI!

April 1, 1988--14 years later "Blackout" blackouts: Bob Goen and Pat Harrington ("One Day At A Time's" very own Schnider) start singing "Auld Lang Syne" during the last minutes of this short-lived show's last morning on the air. The show is replaced the following Monday Morning (April 4th) with the return of "The $25,000 Pyramid" (I betcha Sunday there's gonna be a post up for that anniversary, too).

And the late Rod Roddy coined one of the memorable announcements in game show history saying, "If you would like to be a contestant on Hit Man, Forget It! And now back to Peter Tomarken!" Consider this April Fool's joke to be true.

Another big one, "Just Men" starring Betty White was cancelled on this day. What makes it important is Betty's being the first female game show host to win a Daytime Emmy.

But six months later, Tomarken would come back in a big way as host of Press Your Luck!

OK, let me review this "This Day In History" game show edition for Thursday April 1, 2004. In a sophistacated, soft spoken, monotone sort of voice.

--On this day in April 1st, 1963 (41 years ago today) one of the shows that 1st made Tom Kennedy a household name, "You Don't Say" debuted on NBC.

--On this day in April 1st, 1974 (30 years ago today) the Goodson/Todman cult word search favorite "Now You See It" hosted by Jack Narz (Tom Kennedy's brother) debuted on CBS. Although numerous format changes made it go off the air 13 months later.

--On this day in April 1st, 1983 (21 years ago today) two NBC games left the airwaves as the last shows of Peter Tomarken's "Hit Man" and Betty White's "Just Men!". On "Hit Men", the last contestant to be crowned champion was a then unknown announcer named Rany West and the host would later go on to host the instant gradafaction classic "PYL". Meanwhile, "Just Men!" was the first game show in which a woman won the emmy for best game show host.

--Finally, on this day on April 1, 1988 (14 years later today), "Blackout" blackouts as Bob Goen and Pat Harrington start singing "Auld Lang Syne" during the last minutes of the 13-week wonder, "Blackout". It would be replaced the following Monday with the return of Dick Clark's "The $25,000 Pyramid".

And our quote of the day comes from the late Rod Roddy who doing his contestant plug on "Hit Man" said "If you'd like to be a contestant on Hit Man...forget it."

If it hadn't been for Grant Tinker being ill one day, JM! may had been a hit! Or it would've worked if Jaye P. Morgan hosted (LOL)

1983 was an unlucky year for me! Besides that NBC game, I had a kitchen fire, the Houston Oilers losing season & an intrusion by Alicia (Hurricane Alicia).

But of course after saying YIPPEE! April Fools Day 1983, I sang a certain tune from The Wizard of Oz...

Another April 1st anniversary is the debut of one of my all-time favorites - "Celebrity Sweepstakes". The show would enjoy a nice two-and-a-half-year-run on NBC and another year in weekly syndication.

Unfortunatly, it appears the tapes are no longer around...

I think we reported in ATGS that Burt Sugarman is sitting on something besides Mary Hart, ergo the tapes of Sweepstakes(at least some of them) might be in his holdings.

Hey, I was not the one who first mentioned JM! in this thread; I only warned whoever did it that doing so would coax GSwitch to once again mention his 'glee' in that show's demise.

Let's face it, ANY TV show's cancellation, be it game show, sitcom, teen dance party, etc., can hardly be called a 'cause for celebration,' even if the show was nothing to write home about. We should consider the many people, both in front of and behind the cameras, who work hard on the shows and practically give their all to make them succeed. And yet, some viewers, like GSWitch, don't like to see it that way; in his case, it's the demise of a certain short-lived NBC game show that he hated immensely as being the greatest event that happened in the history of TV.

Chill out, witchy! It's only a TV show!

But there was one NBC show that day which survived the 13-week Neilsen curse, and went on for another 6 years...

On the flip side, the cancellations brought us 2 shows by veteran hosts Alex Trebek & Bob Eubanks, hosting "Battlestars" and "Dream House", respectively.

First things first. On Thursday, when NYSI had its 30th, I actually realized it when I was hearing a couple people in my office where I'm temping (long story) kidding about April Fools stuff, and the first random thing that pops into my head is Narz' farewell speech from the last ep in 75. Spooky...

Say, a curiousity question here.

Albeit that Narz actually had it slightly wrong in that Now You See It was actually on for 14 months, not 13, and 13 days, I THINK that Now You See It has the distinction of being the only game show ever to START its run on April Fools Day, and END it on a Friday the 13th (as it did in June of 75).

Double spooky... Anyone wanna check me on this?
