On the Outrageous Game Shows special (which VH-1 is airing more often than I Love the 80s), I noticed during a Name That Tune clip, the song played by the band sounded out of place, more synthesized instead of orchestrated. The song in question is "Please Help Me I'm Falling."

Was that the actual band, or was it covered up with something else to avoid royalty issues?

  • Just leave the set; that’d be terrific.

This might have been "The Sound System"...a band that was brought in, in favor of an orchestra.

Just generic MOGSM theme music so they didn't have to pay royalty for "Please Help Me I'm Falling."

Good point lol. If they'd show some of the other specials more often, it wouldn't be so bad...how many were there, anyway?

Nope. There were only five of those MOGSM specials. I think adamjk must have also been thinking of one of the FOX game show outtakes specials; of which there were only two.

"Tommy Oliver and His Orchestra" played all of the music on the 1984-85 version of the daily syndicated $100,000 Name That Tune that was hosted by Jim Lange.

In the last version of the show prior to that one, Tommy Oliver shared the music duties with the pop-music band "The Sound System" and a vocalist named Steve Marks (who, unlike his predecessor, a woman named Kathie Lee Johnson at that time, didn't do any "la-la"s).  Which one of them performed a given tune usually depended on the nature of the tune (for example, Tommy Oliver's orchestra would play tunes from the "big-band" era, while one of the other two would do more modern tunes).  (That was the weekly syndicated version of $100K NTT with host Tom Kennedy, the "disco" set, and the "tournament" game format that guaranteed one $100,000 prize winner every 13 weeks during the season.)

Of course, starting in January of 1980, Tommy and his orchestra got themselves another game-show gig with some guy from a jungle, and I don't mean an asphalt jungle!

It was Steve March (stepson of the former $64K Question emcee and son of the legendary Mel Torme), and he did indeed do the "la-las"...one of the 1980 NTTs floating around has him singing the chorus to "We Don't Talk Anymore" as "It's not funny how la-la-la, la-la-la."

The bandleader at that time was not Tommy Oliver, but the late Stan Worth. Bob Alberti did the first couple of seasons, then Tommy Oliver, and then it was Stan Worth for the final two seasons.

Bob only did the first season and the 1973 network daytime run.  Tommy did the next three seasons and the 1977 network daytime run, with Stan doing the last two.

Don't you mean "1974"?  The first network version started 7/29/1974 and lasted until 1/3/1975. The syndicated version started in September 1974, over a month after it debuted on NBC (that syndied version lasted until 1981).

He could also be thinking of the NBC special "Most Outrageous Live TV Moments" which was also produced by Satin Productions. It was just as good as the other Game Show Moments shows, though this one was mostly news bloopers.

I'd love to see another Live TV bloopers show.
