I think that for many people, it's "The Bob Barker Show" more than "The Price is Right." It's hard to provide specific anecdotal eveidence, but you can tell that for some audience members, the Studio 33 experience is as much about seeing Bob in person as it is about having a chance to win a new car. People will laugh and applaud when he turns down requests for kisses during the breaks (and I don't fault him for doing so). And the number of gifts that he receives from audience members even when the cameras aren't rolling can be amazing.
Okay, one anecdote that supports my position: One day, one of the pages told me that right before it was time for Rich Fields to come out and do his warmup, he was going to lead the audience in a chant of "WE WANT RICH! WE WANT RICH!" both as a way to get everybody excited and also to give Rich some of the attention that Bob gets. He started the chant, but as soon as it got going, 99% of the audience was chanting "WE WANT BOB! WE WANT BOB!" He couldn't get the audience to switch over to "Rich."
Granted, there have been some dead audiences in the earlier days of the show. But Bob has since developed his grandfatherly persona that he didn't have then.
I'm not saying that there's no Price after Bob quits. A lot of people enjoy the familiarity of the set, prizes, and games. But there are also a lot of people who watch strictly for Bob, and familiarity of the game or not, they're not going to accept a new host who isn't Bob. I just hope that the inevitable ratings slide won't be drastic enough to hurt the show.
