Game Show "Best of" DVDs
« on: February 09, 2005, 10:43:23 AM »
Just to take Jimmy's idea a little further, you're in charge of putting together a Game Show "Best of" DVD to be released for general sale.  You have complete rights to anything we know to exist, and you can put 12 episodes on the DVD.  What would you choose?

I'd probably stick just to color episodes, since it's been proven that color draws better TV ratings, and I think might sell better than a DVD with lots of black and white episodes.  Even though a lot of us already have most of these in our collections, here are my choices for Volume 1:

1. Price is Right - first ep with Bob Barker

2. Password - first color ep from fall 66

3. Tic Tac Dough - ep where Thom McKee is finally defeated

4. Wheel of Fortune - the very first ep from 1975 (based on the recent E special, this could exist)

5. Jeopardy - Ken Jennings first win

6. What's My Line - ep from first color season with Bennett Cerf on panel

7. Match Game - probably the School Riot ep

8. Newlywed Game - last ABC ep (or maybe a funny one from the syndie run)

9. Family Feud - last Richard Dawson ep

10. Hollywood Squares - April Fool's Day '87 ep with joke played on John Davidson

11. Blockbusters - Bill at his best

12. Who Wants to be a Millionaire - John Carpenter's big win

Given the expanse of what we know is out there it would be very tough just to pick 12, but that's what I'd probably go with in an effort to draw in older and younger fans who might be interested in buying the DVD.  If it sold well, there could always be a Volume 2 with some of the stuff you were forced to leave off Volume 1!

Anyone else want to give it a shot?

Part 2 of Larsen PYL probably would belong on at least a Volume 2. Replace the Jennings first ep. with Jennings 75th ep. The Bergs from the Newlywed Game is one of the better known ones.

Here's what I would do that might sell well.  Take all the shows Andy Warhol taped and call it "A Day in the Life of Andy Warhol."  Make it a Criterion Collection disc.  I'd get to see "Money Maze" again and the fine arts crowd would be overjoyed.  I would also include "The Big Showdown" as an Easter Egg.
Let's Make a Deal was the first show to air on Buzzr. 6/1/15 8PM.

Explain to me how any of these are memorable.  Unless specifically stated; no one would know that was his wife-to-be.

Besides, you left off "The Insider".

Since GSN once did a Y2K special featuring the final episodes of nany game shows, here's my "Farewell Dozen":

1.  The final Marshall Hollywood Squares
2.  Jim Perry's Card Sharks
3.  Dick Clark's $25K/$100K Pyramid
4.  The Newlywed Game(final ABC episode)
5.  The final CBS The Joker's Wild
6.  The last CBS Match Game(1979)
7.  Rhyme & Reason(the destruction of the set)
8.  The last ABC LMAD(1977 I think)
9.  The last NBC Concentration(1973)
10.  The final Art Flemming Jeopardy!
11.  Dawson's first farewell on Family Feud
12.  The final Alex Trebek hosted High Rollers

No, but I would leave off the horrible 2003 version of Let's Make A Deal (hosted by Billy Bush!)
