The people that were around were told they couldn't laugh at Geoff, because then the viewers would know there was no audience.

Only a few viewers would miss the lack of a studio audience. The applause dubs were pretty obvious, and
someone should have been laughing during the Geoff-and-Rod bits at the end of each show.

As he told it, the reason they didn't have a laugh track was simple--producer/director Lucien "Lou" Albert had no sense of humor and wouldn't know when to cue it. Or so Geoff said.
(Something that was accused of Charley Douglass, the inventor of the "Laff Box" used on untold numbers of TV shows--although a member of his family wrote to me when I did an obit for TV Barn and said that Mr. Douglass did have a very good sense of humor.)
