According to cbs.com, the 3/28 week of shows (were) have been cancelled. That would have been last week, has Barker taken ill or something?

It was mentioned on GR.net that Bob had caught the colds that have been going around.

So bring in a sub. If Rich had gotten sick, you're darn tootin' the big broadcast would go on as scheduled with Burton or some other.

I believe that it has been mentioned (although I can't point out where) that in Bob's contract, it is stated that no one other than Bob will host the show while he is still doing it. If he can't tape the show, then the show doesn't tape.

This brings up an interesting question though...except for the times where Rod was out due to his battle with cancer, were there any other times a substitute announcer was used on TPIR for times such as when Johnny or Rod had a cold or couldn't be there for a few shows?

It typically seems that the Star of a show holds more Clout than an announcer does. I guess that's obvious. For example, David Letterman never had a guest host during his NBC days. When Dave was out the show was canceled. However when Paul Schafer needed a night off the show still went on.  It seems that the same thing holds true these days for Jay Leno and The Tonight Show. Either Jay is there or the show just doesn't happen. So I wouldn't say that it is an odd thing for TPIR to be canceled if Bob can't show up. Keep in mind that TPIR is a tough program to sub host. It's difficult to just bring in someone new who doesn't know how all the different games are played. That's a lot for someone new to learn on a moments notice. Canceling the show while Bob is out is probably just the easier option.

If it has happened, I sure haven't read it anywhere. Bob did miss at least one taping in 1974, when Dennis James hosted for him(I believe it was during Xmas Week).

I can't believe Horan didn't post this already! I guess I am getting quicker on the draw.

FYI - Bob is taping this week, after all. Happy to hear he's feeling better.

Keep in mind he just missed some tapings in Feb. '04. Hopefully Bob can stay well.

I'm too lazy to look up the dates, but I remember a couple of tape days during my tenure at the mic that were cancelled because of a problem Bob was having with a foot.

For the most devoted fanatics who simply need to know, the condition was plantar fasciitis. He was surprised I knew all about it having suffered through a bout of it myself.

I know this is "Woolery left Wheel" news to some of you, but from all I've read, Johnny never missed any tapings of TPIR, and neither did Rod up until 2001. I did read, however, that there was one case where Bob Hilton was called in to substitute because Rod was stuck in traffic, but Rod still managed to make it on time.

And as for Dennis James' fill-in in '73--this is when Goodson was still running the show and before "TPIR" had become the National Institution with the WGMC it is today.  If they had a warm body to fill in (and believe me, they knew James was only slightly better than a cold body), they would go ahead with taping.  The crowd may've not been happy that Barker wasn't there, but as long as Denny had the NEW CARS! up on stage, they wouldn't complain much.

As much as like TPiR85, I often wondered if the people at tapings for it (both contestants and audience members) on that show were disappointed that the show had Kennedy at the helm and not Barker..

Enjoy lots and lots of backstage TPIR photos and other fun stuff here. And yes, I did park in Syd Vinnedge's parking spot at CBS

How did they feel about Doug Davidson being at the helm of TPiR94?

Sharp items were confiscated upon entry to the studio.   ;-)
