Square One TV Game...
« on: May 02, 2005, 06:48:49 AM »
If anyone who remembers the PBS series, Square One TV...they had a pseudo game show called "Triple Play". If anyone who remembers that game, can someone tell me about its concept? Are their any pictures out there of this game in action?

Two players compete trying to make numbers frokm 7 to 72, spinning two wheels with addition or multiplication making equaliteral triangles.  On the left wheel are numbers 1 to 6.  The right wheel has numbers 7 to 12 with a Square One TV logo that is wild.

That was one of the better games they had.

Piece of the Pie was just a Feud ripoff, and But Who's Counting/Multiplying would have been more fun had they used actual contestants instead of the normal cast in character form.

I think But Who's Multiplying? was a real game, in the same vein as But Who's Adding?, wasn't it?  But Who's Counting? is the only one I remember as being staged.

Your guess is as good as mine.  The last time I remember watching SquareOneTV was about 15 years ago unfortunately.

Triple Play was, If I remember correctly, a show with two contestants that captures spaces and tried to get three in a row. (example: The contestant captured a 5, 3, 8. The contestant calls out Triple Play, and says that 5+3+8, and wins the match. They were NEVER that easy)

The set was half blockbusters, half battlestars....Blues, Greens, and Purples.

There was a 3-in-a-row game, but it wasn't triple play (I think it was But Who's Counting?)

Uh... yes.  Triple Play's object was to create an equilateral triangle of any size or orientation on the board.

I think the three-in-a-row game was Square One Squares.  But Who's Counting? had various formats involving place values, addition problems, and fractions, but it never involved tic-tac-toe.

The titles make this a bit confusing. "But Who's Counting" was exactly as you describe, but they also had two segments, "But Who's Adding?" and "But Who's Multiplying?" both hosted by cast member Larry Cedar. Two contestants faced a 4x4 grid of numbers appearing in no particular order. One player was blue, one was red, and they each had a designated ring around one digit, 0-9, on a board in front of them. For each turn, a player would move their ring to a different number and perform the appropriate mathematical operation for the two numbers with rings around them at that moment. Doing so turned the number your color. Three in a row wins a calculator.

Square One Squares:

Two kids played--one was blue, one was red.  The board looked like this:
S Q U
A R E
1 T V

The R was wild and shaded both blue & red.  Three in a row wins.  If time ran out, the player who captured more squares (not including the wild square) won.

I can't remember if went something like this or not:
The host read a statement, and two of the show's regulars responded.  The kid had to decide if neither, one or both regulars were telling the truth.  For some reason I think that may have been a different game on SQ1TV, but I'm not sure.

You're right, it is a different game you're thinking of - those are the rules to "Square One Challenge."  The best part about that particular game was the music they played under the explanations after the questions.  And while "Piece of the Pie" was clearly a Feud rip-off, it was sanctioned - Mark Goodson Productions was credited for creative consulting!

Actually, to some extent, it's the rules to BOTH games.  The Squares game is as jmangin says.  Square One Challenge was similar to S1S except that points were awarded for correct decisions, and a final wager question for both players decided the game.

I wouldn't mind touching upon some of these games, later down the road. :)

Triple Play is one that I'm kind of looking at to do...
