If Viacom bought GSN...
« on: May 29, 2005, 12:14:24 AM »
Hello!

I've been thinking of this scenario for a little while but here it is

If Viacom bought GSN, what do you think they might change or get rid of?

For example, I'm thinking they would get rid of the squeezed credits and fee plug omissions and instead replace it with voiceover promos (that would be after the fee plugs have wrapped up of course)

Oh, one more thing, I also think they would also let us see the whole closing of each show without being cut off in the middle (fee plugs and credits)

I'd also recently thought that if Viacom did buy GSN, they would merge it into MTV Networks.

BTW, the media giant would restore GSN under its former origin and rename it Game Show Channel.

You probably haven't seen Nickelodeon lately, another channel under Viacom/MTV's watch -- that channel now uses retyped credits at the end of their shows; recently started using ratings bugs that take up 1/3 of the screen; and has a bad reputation by showing the same episodes over and over again, frequently changing schedules, showing the same marathons, hardly showing any unpopular stuff, and not showing special progarms that they actually promoed on TV.

Believe me -- you don't want Viacom running GSN, especially as part of the MTV family.

If Viacom bought GSN, they'd probably have a daily show dedicated to Big Brother in the summer. They'd also probably bring Survivor and Amazing Race reruns back and make the channel even more reality-based than people had feared before. They'd attempt to out-fox Fox Reality and would be able to leapfrog their number of homes.

Viacom is not your savior. They would squeeze credits just like they do on all their other channels.

But they're also unlikely to make a move right now. Viacom is currently close to a corporate shuffle where CBS and Viacom are due to spin off, so they're probably not looking hard at acquistions now and concentrating on making what they have work.

But really, what are you basing your pie-in-the-sky dreams on? There is no Santa Claus, the tooth fairy was your mom, and GSN will remain GSN.

If you believe in more reality reruns so much, go ask Summer Redstone

He would think it would be nice to make another acquisition and he would agree with me to get rid of squeezed credits and fee plug omissions and do voiceover promos and full closings of each show.

And you know this, how?  Have you spoken with Mr. Redstone lately?  (If so, please ask him to stop by; I think I can speak for Matt and Chris that we'd love to have him visit, and we'd expedite his membership approval so that he can share his wisdom with us.)

Viacom wants to do exactly what every other media conglomerate wants to do: make as much money as possible from what it owns.  If that means shrinking credits and reducing or eliminating show closings -- and it has been explained to you already that they are doing that right now -- then that's what they're going to do.  If you have actual evidence (not opinion, but evidence) that Mr. Redstone believes otherwise, please share it.

Viacom having GSN has crossed my mind only because they program TVLand to older viewers with longer memories.

In a perfect world GSN would be TVLand's similarly programed sibling network.

Though of course, TV Land is now showing more recent stuff, such as "Ren & Stimpy" and "Night Court".

"Night Court"? Cool. When did A&E give up the rights?

ObGameShow: Let's see...Markie Post was a damn good Pyramid player...Richard Moll did Cross-Wits (and pretended to choke a contestant)..."You are human sweat!"
"They're both Norman Jewison movies, Troy, but we did think of one Jew more famous than Tevye."

Now celebrating his 22nd season on GSF!

Recently, I guess -- according to a Tv Land's site, Night Court's slated to begin on TV Land "later this year" (though rumors state that it'll start in August). It will make an appearance on Nick-At-Nite in June, when they celebrate their 20th anniversary with a marathon of various comedy series that appeared on network TV in 1985.

Richard Moll did a fair amount of Super Password, as well, which was often entertaining because he would do the show when Night Court was on hiatus, and during hiatus he would let his VERY BLACK hair grow back in. :)

Pure speculation. Period.

What is it with the cult of children who MUST have their credits un-squeezed? Seriously, am I not getting it? What's the big deal?

Because it's not enough to just have reruns of classic shows. That would make too much sense. Everything needs to be perfect for the fanbois. That way, they can have "clean" eps. for their collection! W00t! R0xx0rs! D0UBLE THE P0INTS!!!

They envy we older folk who were raised on shows with full opening themes, full closing themes, no bugs in the corner, cool ticket plugs, and want their TV like that, too!!

Sorry, lads and lassies. Those days will NEVER come back. In a 1,000-channel universe (I've upgraded it from 500-channel.....That's so 90's), the networks do not want you to find anything else on the other 999 channels, so they keep and hold you with quick closing credits, and they want you to know what channel out of those 1,000 you're watching, too...
