Kudos for those two color photos from the 1961 version. One question: Where are the contestants' microphones?

        In response to previous posts concerning Concentration and its switch
from black and white to color, I offer this little tidbit of
information . . . several weeks ago, I had the privilege of
communicating with Norman Blumenthal.  Norm was the producer of the
orginal Concentration series, as well as an artist who authored the
rebuses used on the show.  I asked Norm:

Why was Concentration one of the last NBC programs to switch from
black and white to color?

Norm:   I fought color.  Because I felt the clues would be too easy to
figure out, with only a portion revealed, ie: corner of a banana
(yellow gives it away).  I won my battles, finally gave in and settled
for pink drawings on maroon backgrounds.

Me:  And what were the colors used during the black and white era?

Norm:  The background cards were dark grey (#8) and the painted
drawings were light grey (#3).

That's a great site you have there! Those rare color photographs are a treat to see, and your history of the show is very entailed, more so than any other Concentration site I've been too. The whole masking tape and sealing wax deal was really neat to have explained.

I love the ideas you have for a revival. I think all Concentration fans, myself included, have their own individual ideas for a revival, but the two-tiered bonus round is a classic and very unique idea indeed. My one question is, and I'm sure you've thought this out thoroughly given how much you already have done, who is YOUR choice to host it?

My choice for the new host would be Ross Shafer, with Burton Richardson as the announcer.

To answer the many requests I've gotten over where those 1961 color pics came from, they appeared in TV Guide's September 9-15 issue from that year ("Checkmate" cast on the cover).  The article was about how the new breed of TV games are kept honest.  Interesting reading about Number Please in there.
